TIPS FOR YOUNG WRITERS

Write to be read.

Tell a story that people will enjoy, use writing techniques only as a guideline. The first rule of writing is to make it interesting to the reader. Keep a journal, you never know when inspiration is going to hit! Understand that inspiration comes from within. You don’t have to travel somewhere special or experience some magnificent event to become inspired. Learn to ‘see’ and appreciate the little things in your everyday life. True inspiration starts with appreciation.

Don't try to make it perfect the first time...

you’ll never finish anything!

Write as you talk first and worry about the editing details later.

Don’t fear constructive criticism.

Think of it as taking your vitamins. Understand that rewriting is simply part of the process. There are no shortcuts when it comes to perfection.

Read your writing out loud to yourself.

It’s like looking in the mirror as you gain valuable perspective on your writing. Many a mistake can be caught using this simple technique.

Write from the heart.

If you write about things you're interested in, your words will jump off of the page.
